Title: The great head shape debate!
Post by: Argyle on April 17, 2008, 02:30:19 PM
I think when people post their concerns on this website, the main issue other than the simple fact that people are losing their hair is their head shape.  I thought therefore it was worth creating a post to dispel the myth and show that there are many shapes sizes etc.

Not sure if it will work or not, but post a pic of your profile shot if you have one.  Here is mine i think, although i may not be able to make this work.  I am not good with these damn pc's!!

OK guys I'll continue the debate. Firstly, I have a few contenders for great head shapes.

1. Ross Kemp (For those that don't know him here is his pic http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/4/4e/Grant_2006.jpg

2. Howie Mandel http://us.movies1.yimg.com/movies.yahoo.com/images/hv/photo/tv_pix/nbc/nbc_summer_2006_tca_party_photos/howie_mandel/nbctca06a.jpg

3. Ving Rhames http://upload.moldova.org/movie/actors/v/ving_rhames/thumbnails/tn2_ving_rhames_2.jpg

4. Seal http://wppd-images.web.aol.com/music_gallery/i/s/seal/01-seal-102607.jpg

There are others including Good Old Telly Savalas. I don't think I have seen heads as symmetrical as these and with the rear of the head being flat and no protrusions. Anyway I am sticking up both both my sides profile and my frontal. What do ya think.

My head shape is soooo PERFECT that my side profile pics are being marketed under a trade mark.  As soon as all the legality work is done I will post them up.

shakf, yours is pretty good; I won't bother with mine because I would fail with my flat spot.  But head shape should never determine whether to shave.  A less-than-ideal headshape is never worse than a bad combover!

Nice head, smooth, niece looks much better than you, but do we see the beginnings of your departure from BBC moving on to MPB in that hairline???? ;) ;) ;)

Naw, not too much...

pretty much my whole life my hairline has been a Norwood 2 (large widows peak look)!

Only difference these days, the line isn't as crisp as it was when I was young..a little choppy..

but to those that have a "want" for their old hair lines...

I'm a hairy gorilla head that they would die for! ;)

I still bow down to Jdog's hairline...is that a tat of a hairline..dudes got hair!!!!!

Ok, here's one that is NOT a great head shape...

You really think the ladies give a sh!t about Jason Taylor's bumpy head shape... I  don't think it hurts his social life by totally exposing his bumpy dome for the world to see from every angle!

Nice dome profile bro! O0

..and for that matter, the dudes that think they look bad or not perfect...I'd never give you a second guess on your decision to shave your head bald...seriously i have always dug the "back shelf" on the back of the head...

call me weird, I think it adds to the bald look...just in a different way O0

I'm a hairy gorilla head that they would die for! ;)

You don't really know that for sure unless you grow it out for 7 to 10 days.  A couple of times when I had the urge to grow mine out, I thought in the first couple of days that there was more hair there than I'd thought -- only to find a few days later that there wasn't.   :(

If your head's been shaved for a long time, it can be tough to assess how much hair is really there waiting to grow back.

shhh, I didn't want to say it here...but I have had it grown out for about 6 days during a pretty busy time the beginning of this year...

Thank goodness I didn't have to show my furry dome to the outside world then...

a freelance gig, kept me from the razor and the world!

I know.... bad example and never again!

so yes, I have it if I want it...just depends on what folks consider a "full head" of hair...

I'm no Jdog!

We are always our own worst critics, head shape included.

I have noticed my crown is starting to thin and my hairline has retreated a few cm's over the last year.

BA great pic of  you and your niece. What happened to the Mr.Clean look??

BaldAndre is THE true BBC icon.

Thanks my bald bro...

with that said, since ONCE again RazorX calls me out, a nice trend with the "hip kids" that helps my BBC status...

the hip barbershop kids create their perfect hairline these days by shaving it to the shape they like...

very clean look! O0

So when I did the very bad ,"grow out week", 2 seconds of razor hairline scraping cleaned up the bothersome irregular line of my front hairline...

like I said ,to a lot of MPB dudes, I'm BBC and to a lot of the world...

but to dudes with a lot of thick, good hair...

I NEED TO SHAVE the mother clean! ;)

I feel I have to add mines too... (difficult to get good shots of yourself! had to take at least 20 before I got 3 that I could post...)

As you can see the main problem is not the head shape, is the nose shape!  ;)

Fucking horrible headshape IMO, the little hair covers it a bit but it really elevates towards the back A LOT. And that's what I hate about it the most... not to mention that it's very narrow, long and pointy from upfront.

I may sound like a cynical bastard, dont take it the wrong way.

But just shave it and be done with it. The constant niggling over it and wondering what you will look like slick bald is just speculation and leads nowhere. and the only way you will truly know if you like the look or not is to take a razor and SHAVE.

Worst case scenario, you are a bald for a few days. Hair grows back.

Yeah I know... it's not that much about desperately wanting to do it, it's more that I have to do it sometime 'cause my balding is getting worse and worse. I just have this feeling that ppl are already treating me differently now that I have a close buzz (I used to have long hair) and it won't get any better when I'll to shave it all off! Anyway, I buzz to 3mm now every week or so. How long would it to take for the hair grow back to 3mm? A week perhaps? So in that light it wouldn't be such a big deal.

I disagree strongly, especially with my headshape and pale skin. There's this young bald dude in the group I play soccer with, and he truly looks like he has cancer! And don't get me wrong, I try to see something good in every bald guy I see. The guy is like Nostradamus with his milk white skin (which I have too btw). That is one of the reasons I'm scared going all the way.

Razor, you are spot on.  Until you shave it all off, the feeling is hard to relate to... a total burden is lifted, and a feeling of total freedom comes over you.  yep_yep, I think you are imagining that people are treating you differently.  I believe you are using that as a crutch to not shave.  If you do have friends that would disown you if you decide to change your appearance, then they are not friends.  You just need to go for it, and the h#ll with anyone else.  It's your life; it's time to start living.  I get the feeling that you are wasting too much time with a cloud hanging over your head.  Let the sun shine in and on your slick, shiney head.

By the way, your head shape is perfect - I would trade you in a nanosecond.  I also don't see the balding at all.

yepyep... I must say you look GREAT from the side. You dont have an odd head shape, IMHO. I think you are lucky that your hair is just thinning and not getting *highs*, like myself. I mean if you would shave it very short, I dont think anyone would think of you as bald, more like your style. But again its very hard to change style just like that for someone this young (Im 21).
Im dreaming every night every hour of getting my hair back, I even pray to god. Yes, I know it sounds weird. I know it would be best for myself to just shave my head short, but its fr***in hard when  I was so good looking with my sun blond hair, I really hate that I cant control my hair growth and that I will have to change look, and I have had this problem for two years now. There is more than just my balding but CRY feels that I dont wanna live anymore cuz of my balding.

I wish, I had the same kind of baldness that some of you guys have, just thinning hair, no highs. Short hair is very sexy if u have a strong front hairline. I even think it is the sexiest look a man can have but that being the sexy look. I have never been that sexy looking guy but the very cute one and now I will have to change style totally. JUST HAVE TO HATE IT.

I think I will cut my hair off soon. Like someone said Im just wasting time with this problem, need to go on with my life. I cant live like this anymore, I know it will be a big relief when its done.

K. just wanted to say this. Sorry if I offended someone in anyway or if I wasted your time with this silly reading but for some balding in young age is a very serious matter. Anyhow I have great respect for everyone of you.

I will be back in 1-2weeks with photos on myself, think it can be interesting for some people to see before and after pictures.

I can feel  how my confident is growing  :D

I disagree strongly, especially with my headshape and pale skin. There's this young bald dude in the group I play soccer with, and he truly looks like he has cancer! And don't get me wrong, I try to see something good in every bald guy I see. The guy is like Nostradamus with his milk white skin (which I have too btw). That is one of the reasons I'm scared going all the way.

Yep-yep, there comes a point where you just have to decide that this is something you either are or are not going to do.  You basically have two choices:

1.  Shave your head and either love your new look, or decide it's not for you and 2 weeks later your hair is back, no harm is done, or

2.  Spend the rest of your life unhappy about your hair loss, afraid to try shaving it off, and wondering if you should have given it a go.

I know which choice sounds more attractive to me.

You never know until  you try.  Worst case scenario is that you don't like it and it takes two weeks to grow back.  It's a risk well worth taking; even if you don't like it at least you'll know, instead of always wondering if you should have tried it or not.  I really recommend giving it a try -- as soon as possible, because that's the only way to stop the torture for once and for all.

I feel you, fellow Scandinavians. I had a Swede for a lil while, and she fell in love with my long hair. I came back a month or two later, and I believe she was appalled. I wasn't balding so much then, but now...I guess I should feel good about being American and boning a Swede (lifelong dream), but now I just feel empty. But hey, if your genes are all messed up, then those beautiful girls gotta be used to it!

Anyways, I'll get pics up sooner or later. My head's okay I think, maybe a lil lumpy.

Hi. 18 here. I'm bald by choice. My hair was thick and annoying before. Now I look at myself and see that my head is flat, and my ears stick out too much for the bald look. And the funny thing is, I don't care! I feel above criticizing. I feel confident and don't worry about it. Screw all the superficial stuff. This is me, in my purest form. I don't worry about how it looks, because it feels good, and it makes me feel free. (and I like touching my scalp  O:O ???)

I just finished my 3rd  head shave an hour ago (3rd in my life) and my scalp is irritated but no cuts that I know of. Still having trouble getting the stubble off (you know that stuff that stick around if you rub against the grain) but I'ma go pick up a higher quality shaving cream, some sunblock and some moisturizers later today.

Later,

I realize that my balding is more voluntary than yours, but you've had 2 years to deal with it. Your hair is dead, buried and rotting. get over it! Now, I have a friend who has a bit of a caustic personality, and if he could give you some advice, he'd say "Do it f****t!".  It may not be polite, but I think he has a point. DO IT!

I think that, as a naturally bald man(?), you do realize how much easier it is to be "bald by choice" than naturally bald. If you don't like being bald anymore, you can just grow it back! If you get negative feedback, just grow it back!

No, you don't base these decsions on what other people think.  You base them on what YOU want.

And actually, guys with MPB have it easier in a way because they don't have to answer the question "Why did you shave your head?" a thousand times a day.

The feedbak *doesn't* matter. Honestly, outside this forum I have not gotten a single non-sarcastic compliment. And the forum is too supportive to tell you that you look like crap if you do. I haven't gotten a single "it looks good, really" or "it suits you". Most people who comment on it look at it like a joke. And even my mom hates bald heads. But I feel good. I feel confident, and I can feel the way I subconsciously walk taller, and I don't look down any more when I'm walking. I walk straight, and look straight. I see people snickering here and there, or staring, and I just smirk and know that I feel good. And while no one says anything, I can see the girls admiring and feel their eyes. They may not say it, but I know that some of the guys feel threatened and I know that the girls like it.

I know it's cliche', but the confidence that you get (especially if you feel like crap from balding, I hear) from taking control of the way you look really does cover up any negative aspects you may have. You could have a lumpy, scarred up head but I think if you were confident it'd still make you look great. When your balding you can probably feel the hair slipping out, feel your confidence drain each day, feeling that you look worse and worse. Maybe, for you, it is a one way street, but is it really any better sitting there worrying about how bad you must look with a balding spot on your head? Shaving is quick, and it has a very psychological effect. When you shave your head everyone *knows* you did it on purpose, and it makes them think you must be in control and be a winner. Whereas balding gives them the impression of a rotting fruit: Just sitting there helplessly, trying in vain to grow it back or trying to cover it up in vain.

Dan

The confidence comes from knowing you had the balls to shave it all off, because YOU wanted to, regardless of what anyone else thinks.   Added to that is the relief from knowing that you no longer have to watch your hair falling out little by little.

Either way, if you have MPB, you're going to end up bald.  You don't have to be thrilled about the prospect, but you do have to accept it.  Agonizing over it endlessly is not productive and won't change anything except to make you more miserable.  Once the hair is shaved off, it's over and you can finally move on.

One final thought:  when was the last time you saw a guy with a shaved head and thought he'd look really great if only he had a horseshoe of hair growing around the sides and back of his head?   ???

The one big thing that always stopped me from shaving earlier (been doing it a year now), is that I have a ridge on the top of my head that is very similar to Jason Taylor, who, like Andre said, really does have that ridge (as do Kelly Slater, Freddie Ljungberg, and David Beckham).

And you know what I've figured out in the last year??? It really doesn't matter. It hasn't hurt me one bit in any aspect of my life, whether at work or with the ladies.

I'll post a profile pic once I get the cord for my new phone to transfer files to my computer.

well, your hair looks perfectly normal and full from every picture I've ever seen of your head, unless the pictures you post are 5 years old or something.  Again, your head is full of hair, you should see my head, and maybe you wont whine so much.  like I said before I'm only 18 and I've been balding since I was about 15, can you imagine how that makes me feel?  Believe me it hurts, a lot, but there's no use in whining about it to other people, they cant do anything about it and really neither can you, I can understand feeling bad about it, and believe me I did, and I still do, like I said, it hurts a lot, especially to be so young, but putting yourself down as much as you do only makes you look like a sympathy whore, and that not gonna make you any friends or bring your apparently sheded hair back, and whining via the internet is even worse, so grow up.  Also, like i said, it hurts when you lose your hair, but what makes it worse is when someone with a full head of hair (you) whines about hairloss that doesn't seem to exist, especially around people that actually are bald/balding (me and lots of other people).

sorry if that came off preachy/assholey, to anyone especially the mods  :-\

That really came out as assholey, don't worry about that. You're not even worthy a debate after that triumphant entrance to this discussion.

well maybe the only way you can get these ideas through that thick hair covered skull of yours is if someone's an a$$hole to you.  Meh, who am I kidding, that'll never work, you'll just go on and on looking for sympathy.

Why the hell do you keep talking about something you haven't got a clue about? You can't possibly know how thick my hair is. I know it isn't thick, quite the opposite, so why do you have to argue?

Hey guys, new to the forum--which is great and informative, btw.  I am another victim of MPB.  My hair has been falling out since I was 22. I am now 26 and I still have a lot of coverage which is surprising to me.  This morning while shampooing my hair and rubbing my fingers through, I noticed that the top corner of my head felt a bit lumpy.  Now I'm literally shitting myself, thinking my head will look deformed once I go completely bald.

Reading other forums, I read that other people have a lumpy feeling head, but once they shaved they couldnt even notice it.  Has anyone else experienced this?

The perfect head is a rare thing, but most imperfections are not noticeable, except of course to you.  No worries, besides, there is no solution to a non-bowling-ball shaped head.  God gave you yours, and it's uniquely yours.  (hope I didn't offend anyone by saying God)

Interesting thread, and I'm jealous of many of the domes. It's one thing to go bald young, shaving it off to then discover a non conventional head shape can be even worse. Do you guys honestly think you can 'own' the bald look without a great head shape then? I seem to notice any small bump on people's heads on bald scalps in real life, and mines very prominent.

Well, my head is quite flat in the back. With hair I could always feel that there is a flat area but after I started to buzz it down I was surprised how big that area actually is. But it doesn't bother me at all.

When I see another sly guy I don't pay extra attention to his head shape. Sometimes a really well formed head has caught my eye though.

I'm glad you're not judging my noggin, your standards are just too high ;D.  Seriously, you admit you took the picture from a bad angle.  Head on, it all looks fine, and the "bad" shot is more "individual" than any problem, IMO.  That "bump" as you call it will soon be in the active MPB zone, and a ridge of hair around it would frame it and bring it to everyone's immediate attention, head on or otherwise.  Shaved, it's just part of the whole package.  Since you're destined to be a bald man, it's your choice, but if it were me, to the wood, hide it in plain sight.

I do like the sly look head on, and that's why it's a shame man, I could move on so much easier if my head wasn't like this. When I catch a bad glimpse of my head shape it eats me up. Going bald at 19 is bad enough, having a bumpy head is icing on the cake. You stand out being bald right? so I can imagine myself being not only the 'bald guy' but also the 'bald guy with the bumpy head' now. I know there's nothing that I can do to change it, and I HAVE to deal with it but as anyone on here will know that had trouble with going bald, it's not easy to just ignore it and move on. SaintC your headshape look perfect!

By the way, that dark stubble I have on my head is 1 DAY after I shaved it with a Gillette Fusion. It's gonna be a bitch to maintain when I have the horse shoe!

SaintC your headshape look perfect!

You only see the "good" sides--unlike a lot of the guys here who keep the less than complimentary shots and are quite honest about it, I don't and I'm not about to start.  :x! I don't show the scar from a large skin cancer in back, I don't emphasize the hole or depression in front where another two were removed.  I rarely let anyone consider how long and large my noggin is,  7 7/8's hats, generally the largest available, are VERY tight!  So the take away is that everyone has some problems--yours isn't particularly noticeable except to you, and the same for me.

By the way, that dark stubble I have on my head is 1 DAY after I shaved it with a Gillette Fusion. It's gonna be a bitch to maintain when I have the horse shoe!

I probably would have more of a defined horseshoe shadow, except that time is taking care of it--it's going gray :'( as has my beard.    And maintenance, there is a benefit of early mpb that is rarely considered, if ever.  If you start very early, then  at some point you're going to have very little to maintain on the "runway."  Essentially just the sides and that should be easy.  I, and others who start in their mid-twenties to thirties generally still have to fight some sparse growth on the top, and it becomes velcro first,  Why can't it drop off too :/O?  Not enough to grow a head of hair, but a pain in the A$$ to clean up :P.  So,  the take away is you really aren't in bad shape--stop worrying and fretting about what was hair, and start living B@%d.

You have to appreciate that your an older guy, when I'm older my scalp will probably end up becoming worn with anything from sun damage, to scars - On top of a badly shaped head, that is. In all fairness, I have been shaving my head to a 0.5 for a while now and nobody has actually said I have an odd headshape, my family are very supportive and so maybe it can't be that bad. Even the most caring people can say the wrong thing when things genuinely do look bad, so this leaves me with some encouragement. But when I look at it I can't help but think that unless I regrow my hair, or wear a hairpiece I'm not going to be happy again. It's something that I never, ever imagined I would have to face, a WEIRD SHAPED HEAD? it's totally new. I see plenty of young guys that look good that are balding and they always have the head/ face shape for it - I feel like I can't ever be in that bracket now, and instead it will be a huge impairment on my overall looks.

I fretted about my big head from the time I was five years old--you are not the start, nor the end of the world.  And yes, I'm an older guy--that gives me some perspective on not only the ravages of time-& I've been ravaged--but also what really counts as a disfigurement.  You are not disfigured in anyway except in your own mind.

You're obsessing on this--no body else sees it--get it, you've said you've even got family support--lots of the guys here, including me, don't have that luxury.  This is your mental image of yourself, it's almost body dysmorphic disorder but I don't think it's gotten to that stage yet.  But that bit about growing hair ;D--impossible, genes are not going to cooperate, and wear a wig :Xo! :Xo! :Xo!--talk to the guys here who did, regret it, have given it up or are going to soon, not even mentioning the cost :o.  Don't worry about the "other guy" I assure you they can point out faults in their domes too.  And it will only be a "huge impairment" to your looks if you let it.  This is all about confidence--it's only hair, it's gone, get on with life--maybe you'll get to be a happy "older guy" too one day. ;)

@JOE-91:
Sure, you're young and maybe still unsure how you can find the way through your life, you want to be like anybody else, and then you discover what you consider a huge disadvantage and have the feeling that you are doomed.

I think everyone has to go through a phase where he has to get comfortable with his adult body. It might be easier for some and harder for others. But there is no choice.

Don't let worrying about your look distract you from enjoying your youth. Focus on your strengths and your likes. You'll be fine.

That's all I can say.

P.S. Here's a virtual head rub for you.  8)

Quite the opposite here--I was worried my skull stuck out too far in the back and envied the guys whose heads are flat in the back.  As I've said earlier in this thread, we all see that "bad" things in our appearance that not only aren't noticed by others but even thought to be a plus.  So, let it go, you look great shaved to the wood--I think you'd look a lot older w/ a full head of hair and you would look rather silly, like you were trying too hard to look young w/ a military short horseshoe--the old mutton dressing up like a lamb ;D.

No problem buddy, I used to be self concious about my headshape, my hair loss etc. after a while you get used to it, and others will too. Its how you carry yourself, not your head shape or hair, or any of that.

Easy!  Patrick Stewart (aka Captain Picard).  His head looks very odd from the side.

One of the things I've noticed about skull shapes is that many will look perfect from one direction and average from another.  I think mine looks great from the side, but it looks lumpy to me from the front.

;D, you couldn't win that one unless you put a thin wispy combover on it--that's the way to a "worst".  "Worst" I ever saw was a crew member on a cruise ship that had rolls, I guess you'd call them, starting about the middle of the head thick fleshy ridges cross wise and about 3/4-1" wide and about 1/4" high all the way back to the nape of his neck--I don't know how he shaved w/o major blood loss.

That picture is taken at a decent angle, I have a rise sort of like Agassi but far more pronounced with a bump that meets in the middle, the back pokes right out too. It looks terrible under light.

I hate to be negative because there is a great vibe on this forum, but let's be honest when something looks bad you just need to admit it. So, with people on here concerned about the shapes of there head, has anyone looked into any sort of surgery? There must be some sort of implants/ surgery to even out areas of your head.

I don't know how well that could work because the skull supposedly shrinks as you get old.  Dunno... maybe it would work with a soft silicone implant that could change shape over time?  But then you'd have a mushy head that could feel really strange... but then you could avoid those annoying knocks on the noggin with a little sub-dermal padding...  Hum... That might be kinda nice considering I just tapped my head on a marble countertop about 4 times today.

Hey Cypher your head shape is similar to mine.  It bothered me for sometime, but I got used to it with the help of our bald brother here at Sly Bald Guys.

It doesn’t really look that bad.  At least it’s not too flat but has some roundness to it.  It’s a pretty good looking bald head.

It seems that most men think that there head shape is not the best for a head shave.  Well, I think that what ever the shape of your head a Bald head is great and enjoy it for what it is.  The best non hair cut you could have. ;D

Unforunately, I don't have a picture to download, but it's almost two years since I went sly. I was very comfortable with it because I have had the horseshoe look for many years so I had a good idea how I would look. Still, it was a huge adjustment but I could never go back to being an unshaved dude. Humbly, I must admit that I coud have modeled for the Headblade logo because I have a nice round head just like the cartoon character Charlie Brown although thankfully not as large.

I can feel  how my confident is growing  :D

William from Sweden.

I'm from Finland. Us Scandinavians are thoroughly f**ked when it comes to genes that cause hairloss.

You don't look remotely bald, and it kind of gets me angry when you whine about it, especially considering I myself am only 18 and barely have any hair on my head, so if anyone gets ti bitch about being bald I think it's the balding kid, ie, me.   :XX

I agree all the way, BB. I have commented on his (yep yep)whining in the past myself and I usually ignore it. But enough already. Make a darn decision and get yourself together. Man up and grab your supposed sac and do something about it! Enough of your BS.

 O0

IRDSM: What do you mean by flat head shape? That's the perfect headshape for shaving... like a lightbulb or something, curvy and all.

I'm very thin on top and it has mostly gone during the last 2 years... so it's been kinda rapid.

well, your hair looks perfectly normal and full from every picture I've ever seen of your head, unless the pictures you post are 5 years old or something.

This forum is not bout who has more right to complain about their hair loss. This forum is about helping others build confidence, and supporting the sly lifestyle.

Anyone who whines and complains about their hairloss to any extreme is pathetic in my book.

I always said that if, and when I ever start to lose my hair and it starts to get to where I can no longer have it in the type of style or cut I want, I would shave it all off. That's exactly what I did. Over the years I started with a shorter, tapered cut and eventually did the gradual buzz cuts at the barber, until I realized it's just so close to being shaved. That's where I knew I was headed. Then I found this place while searching around for headshaving tips. Mind you, The thought of a hair transplant, rug or drug never entered my mind. I knew that was one way I wasn't going to go.
I always knew it was best to let nature take it's course, and I damn sure wasn't going to go to false pretenses or try to hide behind a hair hat. I could never understand this.

Anyway, like I said before and will say again; Take control of the situation, quit your whining and complaining, be a man and go where nature intended.

agreed, I'm sure I am guilty and have complained about my hair loss before, but lots of guys deal with it. Thats why slybaldguys is so great, because many guys have dealt with it in a cost effective, healthy, intelligent way. Guess thats why it bothers me people are bickering about who has more of a right to complain about their hair loss rather than supporting each other. Tis a shame : /

Come on guys, this is a forum to help and advice all those guys who are losing their hair.  It may sound like complains or wining, but it actually the worry and anxiety that comes with losing ones hair.  We are supposed to be here to help each other anyway possible.  I for one am not losing my hair and am bald by choice.  But it must be a traumatic experience to lose your hair especially at a very young age.  So let get with the program and help these guys out.

This is really getting me down recently, I am 17 and on holiday from school so I guess I have more time to think about stuff. I have always had a high hairline but recently I have noticed it retreating even more, I did go on accutane for a few months so that might have accelerated it.

The problem is I have a really weird head, to start off it is huge, over 63cm in circumference (almost 25 inches). To add to that it is the oddest shape, it isnt at all round, both halfs (splitting vertically down nose line) are different shapes. One side is kind of normal, however rather than rounding off there is a sharp angle where the side of my head meets the top, and then the top is kind of like a gently sloping pyramid. On the other side my head bulges outwards at the sharp angle. My forehead is not symmetrical, the normal side protrudes and the other side is sunken in. I have always had a long haircut to hide this but the thought of having no hair to do this with gets me down. I wish it was as easy as shaving it all off.

Well, I have been going bald since I was 17 and the way I see it, God intended us to look a certain way. If you are going bald, just help him finish the job and deal with the cards you have been dealt. As tough as it may be..

I am 25 now...this was a few years back, don't have any recent pics but, whatever, you get the point.

It's starting to grow on me.  O:O

Finally, you're completely right and you'll get over "it" because "it" doesn't exist in the objective world--just inside your head.

I don't understand how I am not being objective.
Because there's absolutely nothing at all unusual about the shape of your head, nothing at all.  You're subjective attitude about it is a problem, and that's inside your head and you will get over it because it's not real.

Hey Dave this goes for not just you but anyone that is/or has been in our situation. Send me some pics. If you havent shaved the dome yet all you need to do is get your hair wet and take a pic in the sun or just a well lighted room. I will be able to get a good idea of what we have to work with. Do not go back to the HT consultation! They are just money grubbing scumbags. Stay positive it will be fine! 8)

Hey guys, I'm sorry for reviving this thread. I just wanted to add to the debate with my headshape
It's not perfect, but I'm no elephant man. I really like how my headshape is made out of straight lines with rounded corners/edges instead of being a perfectly rounded headshape, I'm just not too fond of my forehead/brow bone. I don't know which of the two it is, but either one of them gives me a tiny bit of that 'caveman' look

(https://www.slybaldguys.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi41.tinypic.com%2F35idbev.jpg&hash=35decf1b34a1220f1c9961edbff6a4822acfc559)   (https://www.slybaldguys.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi42.tinypic.com%2F9v9s2h.jpg&hash=3afd3651954d111ea0ce4fc0cea2253d68009341)

BTW, I hadn't shaved my head in 3 days (tssk tssk). You can see how far my MBP has progressed. Still a lot of hair on the back of my head, but my temples are significantly receded (there's still hair growing in the front, but it's getting really thin). And nevermind the 'beard', it's only been growing for 2 weeks and I just shaped my neckline yesterday. Not too bad for a first time, if I say so myself  ;)

Thanks for the comments, guys.

I know I don't look like a caveman since you can barely see the protrusion from a frontal angle. It's just something I noticed when taking a picture in profile. Most people don't notice, they're too preoccupied with the bald head itself.

@Mike: great to know there's someone else with the same shape! To be honest, I haven't seen anyone else with the same head shape either, but that was already obvious back when I had hair. I have a high and quite flat forehead and when you see me at a different angle without a beard, I seem to be 'suffering' from a T-Rex jawline (which I think is quite cool).

@saintc: To be honest, I don't know yet what I'm going to do with my facial hair. It certainly adds some depth to my face, and it feels very masculine. So far I've had not too much troubles with it, though I shaved the neckline because it runs down my entire neck and it looked sloppy. I'm going to grow it out a couple of weeks just to see what my facial hair is capable of handling (I would like the cheeks to fill in some more), but I don't have the intention of growing a beard that's longer than 1 inch.

Whats up SBGF!!!

Been thinking bout going bald now for a year, been debating if i should. Hair is thinning and its not looking good but ive been scared cuz the shape of my head and my GF doesnt think it will look nice (she tried convincing me to try rogaine and was even willing to pay for it lol) but thanks to seeing all of your comments, pics and willing to share advice I am pulling the trigger and shaving my head this weekend!!! Going on a cruise on monday so it will get some color, just worried about getting bumps and igrown hair cuz im black. Take great care when you use the Headblade. Lots of guys, me included, found it better to use a Gillette Fusion, or similar to start with. Anyway, enjoy your new look. Post a picture.

And watch out in the sun! You may have black skin that's used to tanning, but I don't know if your freshly revealed scalp will react the same way. So be sure to apply some sunblock, just in case.

Interesting thread. Let's face it. I'm just a point away from being a ConeHead. http://www.hulu.com/watch/4187/saturday-night-live-the-coneheads-at-home Fine with me I loved the movie.

It did really surprise me how tall my noggin looked first time I shaved. That said, i don't think the overall shape is bad so I pull it off but I have seen folks with head shapes I think should be covered with hair.

It doesn't show that well on my avatar, but I have an indentation in my skull on the right side.

In my younger days, before I went sly permanently, I always thought my cranium stuck out a bit too far...I had a friend that said my head reminds him of a boxing glove...hmmmm.

My head shape was a big concern before I went sly, I must admit.  But after a few days I got used to it.  Now 44 days later, I am completely used to it and it does not even occur to me.  A funny looking shaved head is better than funny looking half grown, balding, horse shoe, comb over hairstyle.  Man I don't know why people hold on to a few strands of hair so dearly in the 21st century.

Bald is so accepted these days, with or without a “perceived” funny head shape.

Really no debate here.  Each guy has a great head, no matter the shape. It's YOU.  Show it off proudly.

The one big thing that always stopped me from shaving earlier (been doing it a year now), is that I have a ridge on the top of my head that is very similar to Jason Taylor, who, like Andre said, really does have that ridge (as do Kelly Slater, Freddie Ljungberg, and David Beckham).

Exactly...and all those dudes are 1000% better looking than me (I'm sure Travman has me beat too ;))...

chicks don't look at a head shape or bump...it's all in the smile and a nice looking face bro's...AND CONFIDENCE!!!

Do not worry about headshape...

I have a "perfect shaped" head...and  THAT hasn't gotten me one friggin' extra look or date back in the day, I'm sure!

That bump/ridge looks pretty small on those guys. I have a bump sort of like David Beckham. Bugs the hell out of me but I need to get over it...

This was one of my biggest fears about going sly. A few people have told me, though, that I have a nicely shaped head for it. Nice boost for my confidence!

The bump/ridge in my head has always bugged me. I noticed that David Beckham and Channing Tatum have the same thing going on...so maybe it's all in my head (literally) lol. I'm working on getting over it...

Jason, once again, it looks great....I take it that you're a clipper shaver, right? Or is that a little growth after not shaving with a razor?
Title: Re: The great head shape debate!

Yah - but I think I need to start using a Razor. Didn't realize how it looks until I took this picture.

For some reason I'm always hesitant to shave with a razor, I don't know why.

Shave with the grain for the first couple of times till you get used to it....Then you can start trying against the grain for the smoother shave. (Just a suggestion)

You have a really good head shape Jason and it will look even better if it is shaved smooth. I know I am not alone in saying that you have the face and head that a lot of us sly guys are envious of.

Hey guys,

Just popped in and saw that this post that I must have started a few years back was still rumbling on. Amazing what a big issue it is for guys.

I was on holiday recently and was thinking back how my life has changed from the days of posting repeatedly on here looking for reassurance about my head. I think on balance I would rather have hair, but you know what?  Nowadays I simply don't care all that much. So I think the message I want to get across is that you don't have to love the shaved look to get comfortable with it.  I know what options are available to me and this is by far the best of them.

I keep on meaning to pop by here and post more often.  I hope you guys are all well and it is good to see some of the old faces still posting.

My head is not the best shape and im not the biggest fan of it but im fine with it now have fo a while now and when im not thinking about it i dont "see" it if you know what i mean my head is the same as Kurt Angle i show you.

Which made me feel better cause being a big wrestling fan Kurt Angle is one of the best and very respected in the buisness.

I have been bald since I was 18 and didn't shave my head until I was 53 and that was 10 yrs ago. I have always been comfortable with my baldness, but when I first shaved, it was still a shock to me. Lol! Now, there are some heads that are made for thiis style and others, not so much. My point is that if you think you rock the shaved head look, then go for it.
