What to do after sunburning the sly dome...
« on: April 23, 2007, 05:14:59 PM »
Yes, after all the years of being sly, I always seem to forget the sunscreen the first few weekends of nice weather!  With everything I did outside this weekend (put in a small brick patio, washed the jeep, took the top and doors off the jeep and drove around for a few hours), I now have a nice red tinge on the scalp...

For the first time though, I used some Banana Boat Aloe After Sun Gel on my head... I've used this stuff before for various other parts of the body that get burned from time to time, but never on the head.  I figured what the heck...

It helps out immensely with the burn... my head is already a nice dark tan!  Plus, it leave a "semi-gloss" finish!  O0

That's good to know!  Though, I hope I don't need to use any soon.

Does anyone know what the shelf-life of sunscreen is?  I bought a huge tube of Banana Boat SPF 30 a couple of years ago.  It will probably last me the rest of my life.  This is the third summer I will be using the same tube.  I checked the other night and there's no expiration or use by date on the label.

When I did search I found that the rule of thumb is about 3 years if there is not expiration date.

Thanks.  I was leaning toward getting a new tube, anyway.  Why take the chance?

I've been using a 50-50 mix of water and white vinegar for sunburns.  Works pretty good, takes the burn out and turns to a tan faster, or so it seems.  This is an old wives tale though, so your results may vary.  Aloe vera works good too.

I have never had a tan in my life.  I'm lucky if I get get enough color just to take the deathly stark white look away.  Hardly qualifies as a tan, though.

I hope to never have to answer this question. I am pretty religious about putting on sunscreen and/or wearing a hat. It'll be a new experience for me golfing during the summer as a SLY guy. I now love going without a hat, but 4-5 hours in direct sunshine (regardless of SPF), can take its toll. So, I will likely be wearing my bucket (Gilligan) style hats. I also bought a couple of "Panama" Style straw hats that provide coverage of the dome & ears. Very important to keep the ears shaded. My father in law got melanoma on both ears as a result of direct exposure over the years.

Oh, back to the original topic ......... Aloe Vera is awesome for post-burn relief.

You can use Bald Guyz Moisture Gel which was created so as not to be sticky and really sooth the sunburn. We use many herbal moisturizers that absord into the skin to help speed healing.

Sounds like some quality stuff! Thanks for the tip. I'll try to pick some up at the store.

Make sure you wash the dome after you're done with that treatment. Otherwise, you'll walk around smelling like a side salad.

Vinegar is a proven remedy to take the sting out of a sunburn. Apple Cider is a little better than white, if you can handle the smell. Rinse it with a mild conditioning soap. Living on the coast I have had a few Vinegar baths after being at the beach longer than expected and forgetting to re-apply the sunscreen.
Vinegar is also used by lifegaurds at the beaches to take the sting out from jellyfish, they keep a ample supply.
Most pure aloe products will cool the burn but they usually feel like your coated with a thin veneer after, I would think this would cause some discomfort when you move your eyebrows. Solarcaine works good for the sting and leaves your skin oily, so if you get really burnt you might consider it.

OK, here's mine...but you better LOVE a REAL shiny head (and a little sticky, but will help)...they have vitamin E oil...it's thinner than the regular vitamin e you find in the caplets...it WILL help, but you'll be WAY shiny and a bit sticky...

but your dome will heal....

Lesson learned....use 30spf or higher....a few days of tanned head isn't worth weeks of a damaged peeling dome you can't shave nice and slick...

use sunscreen, my friend!
