Title: Show Us Your Glasses!!!
Post by: slymyke on October 09, 2015, 04:07:10 PM
In the spirit of a couple of my favorite threads on SBG... I thought I would start a thread for everyone to show their glasses.. since they go so well with a shaved head.

I know we have had discussions about glasses and pics posted, but they seemed to be in with other topics.

I usually wear contacts, but had some Oakley glasses that I would wear occasionally.  I just got some new Ray-Bans and I am tying to get used to them.

Show us your glasses!!  I know there are several out there!

As you can see, I didn't pay extra for the "no-glare" option.  lol

Mine are about three or so years old. I probably need to get them replaced.

I just don't like being told how much stronger a prescription I need.

I always go retro.

One of the things I like best about these frames is that they a come with magnetic clip-on sunglasses:

P.S. I have no idea why both pics are reversed left-to-right. /scratches-head

I like to see clearly, so I generally get new glasses each year with a slightly revised Rx. I buy my lenses and frames from www.zennioptical.com (http://www.zennioptical.com) which makes the glasses affordable. My most recent glasses are progressives, transitions, all of the coatings (anti-water, anti-oil, anti-reflection, UV) Rimless.  High index of refraction lenses. About $150.  The Doctor's office would have charged me closer to $500 for the same thing.

Pictures shortly.

New here, haven't gone fully sly yet, but just got a buzz... been wearing glasses my whole life.

(https://www.slybaldguys.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fs29.postimg.org%2Foyi63tvpz%2Fglasses.jpg&hash=5827acfd998a7cd873de09fa9646aa967e982a52) (http://postimage.org/)

Funny story as to how I ended up with glasses:
Growing up both of my parents wore glasses and I, for some reason, thought glasses were really cool. So, in 2nd or 3rd grade, I intentionally botched the eye exam when they took me. I think wearing prescription glasses when you don't really need them has the opposite effect- it messed them up!

I practically live in my sunglasses even indoors on some days due to migraines and photo-sensitivity (having blue/grey eyes don't help) which I also along with my baldness inherited from my mother. Image was taken on the 7th of last May with my Blublocker Sunglasses. I have several other pairs of wraparound style sunglasses which seem to fit my face and head shape well. This was also the first day I dived in and shaved my head bald.

Beard is much longer now btw at the half yeard. This was at 3 months. Shaved that beard and started the current one August 1st.

I wear mine pretty much all the time unless I'm going to be outside a lot, like at a Renaissance Faire or highland games (I'm wearing a kilt in my profile pic).  Then I wear contacts.  Anyway, here's my pic.
Oakley rimless, no coatings.  I haven't had very good luck with them.

Last time i had a need for glsses was during elementary school, had to wear reading glasses. But as i matured, my vision corrected itself somehow and i dont need them anymore. As for sunglasses, you might think since i live in phoenix, i would wear them often, but when i got a new car back in sept last year, i accidentally left my good sunglasses in my old car when i sold it, and for one reason or another, i have yet to replace them. Dont even really feel any urgent need either since the only time i really wear them is while driving, and I have found that doing so makes it difficult for me to see my instrument cluster, and i end up speeding because my car rides so smooth it feels like im going much slower than i actually am, well at least in comparison to my old car. I know i eventually will get a new pair, if i see one that just calls out to me, and when i do, ill post a pic of myself with them on this thread.

My new computer bifocals in the clunky 50's style frame my father wore for most of my childhood.

Egad. Wearing them makes me look like a bearded version of him.

My greatest fears as a teen were to go bald and to have to wear glasses (well, I had to, but just refused to). Now I am comfortable with both. Not an aesthetic superlative, but I survive mirrors and photos.

I wear contacts, too, but mostly specs these days. I own more than two pairs, which is exceptional for a guy. The frames on the left are probably my most courageous ones, the kind that makes me scratch my head on some days (the bad-hair-days) and say to myself "Are you serious?" But not so on other days.

Welcome to the board, Glottonym!

I understand completely the allure of that style of aviator frame. I really miss the peripheral vision it provides.

I also own but rarely wear my contacts. My only excuse is pure laziness in the morning.

Glad you joined us. Please post something in Introductions.

I'm due for an eye exam soon and thinking that it's probably time that I updated my frames.  I've been trying to wait out the current fashion of big chunky frames that look like what I had to wear in the 70s.  It wasn't fun the first time around and I've had no desire to relive the experience.  ;)  I look better in round or oval frames, which have been out of style for a while now.

I'm also trying to decide if I want to continue wearing contacts.  I can see better with my glasses and my eyes feel better whenever I take a break from contacts but glasses have their own sets of disadvantages.   Decisions, decisions ...   :-\

I hear ya! When I got my current glasses a few months ago the optician tried like Dickens to get me to adopt plastic frames. And I tried some on and gave them a fair chance -- but they just weren't me. So I ended up with another pair of retro oval glasses like in my picture.
Title: Re: Show Us Your Glasses!!!
Post by: Razor X on June 03, 2016, 05:03:21 AM
At this point I haven't ruled out plastic frames altogether, if I can find some that aren't too big and overwhelming.  Will depend on what they look like on.  I'll probably end up with something that is past its stylistic peak and on its way to being out of fashion.   ;D

The ones I tried on were clear plastic, which I liked a lot more than the black, but still had that retro-retro shape that you and I remember from 3rd grade:

(https://www.slybaldguys.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fs33.postimg.org%2F6icmqv8yn%2F7003_2_FRNT.jpg&hash=7b98471d065bd55a8f1b1ed024ac56187cea75c0) (http://postimage.org/)

They just didn't do it for me.

Perhaps if I'd had a choice of something a little rounder, like the following, I might have gone for it.

I like the bottom ones better but I do not like the clear plastic. The clear plastic seems feminine to me.  The bottom ones are the same shape as the glasses I had in high school. I liked them at the time but I probably wouldn't wear frames like that today. I'll probably end up doing what you did and get metal  frames that are pretty close to what I have now.

I've been taking a break from my contacts for the past few days to give my eyes a rest. I'm considering giving up on them altogether but I'm not sure I'm ready to go back to full-time glasses wearing.

Interesting. I don't find the clear frames feminine at all. I kind of like how they recede into the face, and are likely the only plastic frames I'd consider.

I like how they don't overwhelm the face but they're not something I would ever wear.

I went to the optician this morning to get my glasses adjusted.  I browsed at some frames while I was waiting and honestly did not see anything that I liked.  I've been waiting for years now for this ugly frames fad to end but it doesn't seem like it's going to happen anytime soon.

I have magnetic clip-on sunglasses for my frames.  May sound geeky but they are convenient and I like them.  They don't seem to be making these at all anymore. The selection was very sparse the last time I was at the optician's office and today there were none at all that I could see.

I guess the magnetic clip ons don't work too well with big bulky plastic frames.  That may be why they are dying out.

It is interesting to see how different perspectives can be. I really love bold glasses and I find smallish, round metal frames boring (in themselves; this does not mean that they don't look very attractive on somebody's face). I also find the larger visual field of larger glasses much more comfortable.

I hated the styles of the late 1990s and especially early 2000s when it was all "small is beautiful". "Do not wear large frames, because with your prescription the lenses will be very thick." Blabla - firstly, there are now high-index lenses available, which reduce thickness considerably. Secondly, I do not think too many people want to look at my head from a certain angle just to check out my lense thickness.

My teenage "I hate and will never wear glasses"-phase is strongly linked to pilot frames so I thought I would never ever wear this style again. And here I am, choosing a pilot frame. The great thing about modern frame design (or any kind of design, for that matter) is that retro is never the return of the same, but the is the odd modification here and there and the same suddently looks very different. And it is like revisiting the past and reconile yourself with it.

But that's just me (owning a few different frames, but all of them plastic, all of them large (not too large, though)).

I agree on the clunky, heavy and the slim horizontal frames not being for me.  I have stuck with the virtually invisible "Silhouette" metal, hinge-less frames (2 lenses connected with a nose piece & 2 arms & no metal around the lens), but did change to a more rectangular lens 2 years ago. i have "clip-on" sun glasses for them. Gave up contacts in my 40s due to dry eyes.

I'm also trying to decide if I want to continue wearing contacts.  I can see better with my glasses and my eyes feel better whenever I take a break from contacts but glasses have their own sets of disadvantages.   Decisions, decisions ...   :-\

From memory, seem to remember that you have prescription for distance and reading. Have you considered progressive lenses (otherwise known as varifocals) ?

(https://s9.postimg.org/4rozt498f/IMG_0018.jpg) (https://postimg.org/image/4rozt498b/)

These are my first pair of full time glasses.

Until you reach your 40s, you may have had good eyesight and never visited the optician. Your only experience of glasses are the shades you sometimes wear on a sunny day. This was the case for me.

Then you notice difficulty with small print. This happens to many people in their 40s and it happened to me. So my introduction was a pair of +1.00 reading glasses. Just wore them now and again for small print. And I thought that was that.

Your eyesight changes. Reading glasses become a complete necessity. And then you to start struggle with reading the credits at the end of television shows. And in my case, a few years  later, the optician recommended progressive (varifocal/bi-focal) lenses for both distance and reading. I was going to be wearing glasses full time.

I went full time with the metal framed glasses shown in this post. They were for my distance vision, which now needed correcting. Up to a point, they mostly corrected my reading vision, too. But my eyesight changed again and I decided to switch to varifocals. I've been wearing varifocals for over 4 years. And wearing glasses full time for 6 years.

If you've never worn glasses and think you now need a pair for reading, then get your eyes tested. Your new prescription will help you choose the right over-the-counter reading glasses. After that, you may find your eyesight worsens and the opticians eventually recommends progressive (varifocal/bi-focal) lenses. I remember putting on my progressive lenses for the first in the opticians. And I walked out the shop with them on ! Wearing them all day long got me easily adjusted in a few days.

Along with the sly bald head, glasses are an integral part of my appearance. Just as well, nowadays, I really cannot tolerate my vision without my glasses.

For those new to wearing glasses, consider buying frames where you can subsequently change the lenses. Just had my 2-yearly eye test. Distance vision unchanged but my reading vision has got worse yet again. So I'll get new lenses for my Ray-Bans. Cheaper than new glasses.

Thought I'd turn my experience into some advice for others !

Just curious, how many who wear glasses regularly have gone over to transitions?  I've been wearing them for about 3 years now.  I got tired of carrying multiple pairs around, and the frames I like wouldn't work with clip ons.  It would be nice if they'd figure out a way to get them to tint more behind the windshield of a car, but otherwise, I really enjoy them.

My varifocals have transition lenses. And been wearing transition lenses since going "full time" 6 years ago.  Like you, I really enjoy them, too. You get welcome protection from the sunshine, without doing anything ! And I like the intermediate tint, between 0% and 100% transition, which is good for cloudy days.

I agree with you about their limitations when you are in a car. But I read there are new transitions that work indoors, too. When you're outside and go indoors, they take a while to adjust. So for several minutes, you look like you're wearing sunglasses inside !

Still, I'll always choose transitions and recommend them to anyone.

Concerning Transition lenses ( the ones that get dark in the sunshine), Different brands change at different rates and end up at different darknesses (full dark).  I usually buy me glasses online from ZenniOptical.com.  They have a 'house brand' transition lens and "Transitions".

While they say the Transitions brand get a little darker and change a little faster, I'd say the brand name Transitions turn A LOT darker and a LOT faster. (both directions). I've tried both. The house brand was not worth it. Did not get dark enough and did not switch fast enough. It's worth the extra price.

I'm not aware of them switching from light to dark, but I'm not squinting outside because of them.

For driving, I buy single vision 80% tint lenses.  They are darker than the Transitions. great for longer trips or out in the snow/sand/water.

I also find that transitions in warm weather hardly change at all. But in cold weather get real dark. I've been using flip up clip ons lately. When driving I can switch back a forth in a second.

Apparently there is a new kind of Transition lenses that will get dark in the car.  The inability to turn dark in the car was always the biggest drawback, IMO.

As far as I know, the XtraActive are the only ones that tint in the car.  That's what I have.  It's still pretty minimal, but it's something.  My optician suggested a new type that gets both lighter and darker in normal conditions, but they have almost no tint behind a windshield.

Does anyone have any experience with Transitions lenses and computer work in an office setting? I've been experiencing some eye strain lately.  Wondering if Transitions would tint just enough to reduce glare from the screen.

I don't have transitions lens but I do have an anti-glare coat on my lens that does the trick for me.  I also work in an office setting.

Transitions still work off of UV, so they won't tint indoors.  Even if you're near a window, most have anti-UV coatings now, which is why they don't tint much in the car.  The best you can hope for is the tiny bit of base tint that transitions tend to develop over time.  It isn't enough to make any noticable difference, and it takes mine about a year before it really sets in anyway.

I agree that Anti-Glare would be more beneficial.  There are usually multiple anti-glare options.  Make sure you opt for the best of them, both front and back.

I've got the anti-glare coating. Not sure if the eye strain is due to glare or something else.

I often get a separate single vision lens pair of glasses for computer work in the office. Just the UV coating.

Being Far Sighted, I don't see any glare in my glasses. Everything up close is blurry.  For those near-sighted, you CAN see things clearly up close and are more likely to be bothered by reflections in the lenses and want an anti-reflective coating.

When I had bi and tri focals, I never saw the lines. They are up close and just burr out of sight.  But near sighted people may find them really a bother! I'd think the same applies to reflections in the lenses.

Ray-Ban Clubmasters, in my profile and attached picture.

Both my distance and close-up vision needs correcting. Bifocals have a line, progressive are expensive. And designer frames add to mounting costs. So I took a chance, saved money and bought online.

Ordered two pairs of frames from an authentic eBay seller. And got them sent directly to a company who reglazes lenses. Used this company before for my previous glasses, as my prescription changes. They do a good job.

I have one pair with progressive lenses, with transition lenses darkening in a daylight. A second pair of prescription single vision reading glasses for PC monitor. My reading vision is poor these days, so over-the-counter aren't suitable.

So I'm happily Ray-Ban and bald for a few years now !
