Today an article I wrote titled "What internet marketers can learn from a trucker" was featured at ShoeMoney.com.

What is ShoeMoney.com?

It's a blog that was started by Jeremy Schoemaker to help bloggers and other website owners with marketing and expanding their web presence.

How did I get featured on ShoeMoney.com?

Jeremy was heading to PubCon in Vegas and needed guest bloggers to fill in for him while he was away. He asked his readers to submit their posts on "What internet marketers can learn from X" and wanted us to fill in the X. I'm always amazed at how complex people try to be in designing their sites and wanted to write something that would help them realize that they should make it simple. Many of my truck driver friends or drivers that I've met in my life are pretty simple people so I made parallels between their job and internet marketing.

Why am I so thrilled to be featured on ShoeMoney.com?

You could say the massive amounts of traffic that Jeremy gets and the exposure that it gives me and Sly Bald Guys. Though, that's just a small portion of the thrill. To me it helps solidify the reputation of me as a blogger and Sly Bald Guys as a website.

Apparently Sly Bald Guys is huge in Moldova. I was checking Alexa today to see what the traffic ranking for Sly Bald Guys is and I came across a little tidbit that caught my eye; Sly Bald Guys ranks at the 7,362 top website. Now, this isn't like ranking in the top 100 or anything, but with the millions of websites out there, it amazes me that many people in Moldova even know about Sly Bald Guys.

If you're like me, you're probably wondering where Moldova actually is. Well, I didn't know that answer to that until today. Actually, I didn't know the country even existed today (Geography wasn't my best subject).

Be Better Guys - Beautiful Bald Heads: Learn to Love 'Em

I was over at BeBetterGuys.com today and found an article that Brian Joyner, the bald co-founder of Be Better Guys, wrote up. I really liked the article because he makes a lot of points that I also try to make when I talk to guys dealing with hair loss. Here are some of the highlights.

Brian writes:

For most of us, it's pretty late in the game when a guy realizes that his hair is leaving for other locales (like his back or ears). This is when the comb-overs, Hair Club for Men, and toupees come into play for some guys. Those were never options for me. But, being an African-American man coming up in the age of Michael Jordan meant I had an option other than watching the bald spot on the crown of my head expand and taking on a George Jefferson look, and that was to shave it off.

Here are the points that I wish everyone could realize.

Men with thinning hair have the inevitable moment when you've crossed that threshhold - you cant hide it any longer and have to make a choice as to what to do. Cursing your genes wont help. Male pattern baldness is a genetic predisposition that can be inherited from either parent, so what are you gonna do, diss your mom? Most treatments don't cure alopecia, a hair loss disease that strikes men and women for no known reason. So, you have a few choices:

- First, accept that it's happening. Comfort yourself with this: baldness, in test studies, is frequently associated with higher, not lower, levels of testosterone. So you have that going for you.
- Second, if you haven't totally lost your hair, a product like Rogaine or Propecia can help you hold on to what you have. It won't grow hair where it's already gone, but it can enlarge the follicles on your head, helping you delay hair's send-off.
- Third, once you recognize its going, going, gone, we recommend you cut your hair shorter so that the thinning becomes less noticeable. How you get it styled will, in part, depend on how you are balding. Talk to a barber/stylist about your concerns and let the professionals help you figure out what works for your face and thinning hair.

Now, I'm pretty sure my readers will know that I advocate point two, as it's really just delaying the inevitable and a waste of money.

Brian finishes his article off with:

The future says more guys will look like me in the coming years, walking tall and sporting a beautiful bald head. The days of feeling ashamed of your thinning hair are gone, and covering up your genetic predisposition with toupees or combovers now gets you laughed at. I know women who prefer a shaved head. I know many guys who actively shave their heads, even though they aren't bald. It makes a strong statement. In fact, when I see you out on the street, I'll give the nod of approval from this bald brother to another.

Bald men and the Freakonomics of Online Dating

If you've read Freakonomics, then you've probably read the section (pages 80 to 84) on online dating. I recently found a summary of the section that I though I'd share with you guys.

Freakonomics by Levitt and Dubner is a rather amazing book in which the authors apply analytic techniques to all kinds of questions that economists don't usually study. For example, they show that Sumo wrestlers throw matches to manipulate the standings. And that elementary education teachers cheat for their students to raise
scores on standardized tests.

So, what does this have to do with Internet dating? Well, Levitt and Dubner took data from a dating site and answered the age-old question of what attracts women to men and vice versa -- or at least what features of an Internet dating ad attract the most email in response.

Before reading on, try to guess what features in a man's ad are most likely to attract women to respond.

Got your guess?

OK, here is what they found:

1. Man is looking for a long term relationship.
2. Man is rich.
3. Man is tall.

So if you are Kareem Abdul Jabar looking to marry then you're golden. But if you're short, poor, and looking for casual sex then you may be lonely.

Now, what attracts a man to a woman.

Got your guess?

OK, here is what Levitt and Dubner found:

1. Woman is looking for casual sex.
2. Woman is thin.
3. Woman is blond.

So, if you are Evilicious Blond looking for a one-night stand then your going to see a lot of hits!

It's relatively easy to become blond. And it's relatively easy to lie about your income and not get
caught (as long as you don't exaggerate too much). The other variables are a bit harder to control...

Some other notes. For men weight was almost irrelevant. For women, it was bad to be really poor or really rich (presumably men find rich women threatening). For men, being balding was bad but having a shaved head was good. Right on!

Oh, and one last thing. You can't get away with not including a picture. Levitt and Dubner write "A low-income, poorly educated, unhappily employed, not-very-attractive, slightly overweight, and balding man who posts his photo stands a better chance of gleaming some emails than a man who says he makes $200,000 and is deadly handsome but doesn't post a photo."

7 reasons why you should never get a hair transplant

1. Unless you have lost 100% of your hair, the rest of your hair is going to continue to fall out after getting a transplant.

2. When more of your hair falls out, you will have to get more hair transplants to cover it up.

3. Because of #1 and #2 it's much more expensive than the price they quote you because they won't know how many follow up surgeries you will need.

4. It's surgery, therefore it's going to be painful.

5. Because it's surgery, you will have scars on your scalp. This means if you want to shave your head later, you'll have to show the world that you previously had a hair transplant.

6. Everyone will know that you have plugs.

7. Chicks don't think plugs are attractive.

The 'Black Snake Moan' actor believes his hairless head makes him look "beautiful", but admits he wasn't always so happy about his lack of locks.
Jackson said: "I keep ending up on those bald is beautiful lists. It's cool. You know, when I started losing my hair it was during the era when everybody had lots of hair. Guys either had it down to their shoulders, or all black guys had these big afros. All of a sudden I felt this big hole in the middle of my afro, I couldn't face having a comb over so I had to quickly figure what the haircut for me was." Despite being comfortable with his baldness, Jackson enjoys having hair in his film roles. He said: "Now I'm very comfortable in my own life, not having hair, but not very comfortable with my characters not having hair!" The 58-year-old actor donned an afro to play hitman Jules Winnfield in Quentin Tarantino's 'Pulp Fiction' in 1994, but stayed bald for last year's cult hit 'Snakes on a Plane'.
